The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

My wifi connection is rock solid.  I just upgraded to an Asus RT-N66U router about a month ago and couldn't be happier.  Every room in my house gets a solid 3 wifi bars on all of my iOS devices.  I haven't had a single issue with this router, so I highly doubt it has anything whatsoever to do with my router.

However, the Apple tech that I spoke with on the phone did say that the iPhone chooses whichever connection is best and uses that one.  I assume this means that if over LTE you were getting 20Mbps download speeds and if your wifi was only getting 1Mbps download speeds, that your iPhone would switch to the LTE even though you have wifi enabled.

Now, if this is true, then how does the iPhone determine the "best" connection?  Over my wifi network, I get around 40Mbps up and down.  Over LTE, I am around 20Mbps.  So as long as I'm not downloading a bunch of stuff from another system, then it should choose wifi.  However, if by "best" it takes into consideration other factors such as ping, etc. (I'm no network engineer), then it may indeed choose LTE over wifi.

Anyhow, the Apple tech I spoke with said that she'd talk with her engineers and get back to me tomorrow, Thursday.  Any enlightening information given to me, I'll stick in here.

Iphone 5: Settings>General>Mobile Data

 

Has anyone seen this before? The phone with mobile data as the menu also did have the hotspot shortcut on the main settings screen.

If you guys out there could keep an eye on your Cellular Usage Data, that would be great.  Maybe it's a problem with my iPhone 5, or maybe it's a much larger problem.  Seeing as I used to have unlimited data with Verizon, being charged with everything above 2GB would be very costly for me...especially when it's not even my fault.

iPhone 5, Exchange push, app push notifications, iMessage fail with cellular data turned on

Decided to start a new thread about this problem that a growing number of users are having specially with the iPhone 5.   It is unclear if this is just affecting Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) customers, however a small few have mentioned they are having problems over AT&T (HSPA+ or GSM).

 

With cellular data turned on (even if you're connected to Wi-Fi), users of Enterprise Exchange email accounts, the push feature eventually crashes.  This causes other problems, such as: sending via iMessage and other app notifications fail.    By turning off cellular data completely and connected to Wi-Fi, there are no problems at all.   (To restart the push service, you can either reboot or simply turn Airplane Mode on and then back off)

 

There have been multiple 'fixes' mentioned on different forums, but every single one that was mentioned I have tried to no avail.    I have also had my phone replaced at the Apple Store and did nothing to it except for adding my Exchange account.  Guess what??  Same exact issue.   A couple of users claim that putting the phone into DFU mode and doing a restore that way fixes it, but this does not work either. 

 

This problem seems to be an iOS bug that is tied to the new LTE chip that is in the new iPhone 5.    Of course these chips are not in the older gen iPhones, and iPads, etc., so upgrading to iOS 6 on these devices does not cause this same issue.

iphone 5 Cellular data keeps disconnecting

My iPhone 5 is running on iOS 6.0.1, the version that suppose to fix the Cellular and WiFi issues.

 

It seems like the issue is even worst! My wifi DOWNLOAD speed is faster, however, whenever i view video's on Youtube or any other apps with video streaming, it is extremlly slow!

 

Thats not a major issue, however, my cellular data ALWAYS keeps on disconnecting, it shows full bar and 3G or E is always there, however, nothing seems to work, unless i go to setting, turn cellular data off for a few sec's and then back on. sometimes this works and sometimes it does.

 

My friend also faces the same issue with his phone and we are on two different networks.

 

I hope apple fixes this issue in iOS 6.1
