Can you, from Sweden, go to the U.S and buy a unlocked iPhone 5?

I'm traveling to the US in May and wondering if I could buy a iPhone 5 (unlocked) and use it in Sweden without any problems? I've been told to get the AT&T version (Telia in Sweden).
